Dating with Alpha-Gal
“When we first started dating, adjusting my diet was pretty difficult. I’m definitely a steak and potatoes kind of girl, and I LOVE a good pot roast. I didn’t realize how imperative it was to make these changes until the first time I witnessed a reaction. Since then, I’ve learned to embrace this new “lifestyle.” Here’s what I’ve found helpful:
⁃ Our rule has always been that if I do eat something, I have to quarantine for 48 hours. We expect by then, all allergens have metabolized.
⁃ Learn how to confidently use an epi-pen. Make sure there is always one on hand, where ever you go. You never know when you might need it. With that said, come up with a game plan. Decide WHEN you should use it, and WHAT to do next.
⁃ Don’t be afraid to firmly advocate. It’s easy to avoid going to certain restaurants, but family get togethers are a little trickier. Make sure anyone who is attending is clear on what should not be served. Offer up alternative recipes, or prepare the protein dishes yourself.
⁃ Finally, find other recipes that you enjoy making and eating. We’ve had so much fun exploring new cuisine from different cultures and finding substitutes to American favorites. Eliminating certain foods doesn’t have to be a source of tension! Navigating this allergy can also be an adventure!”
